Insurance & direct billing

Understanding your eye care coverage — and making the most of it.

How direct billing works

Direct billing means we submit your insurance claim for you at the time of your visit — you pay only the portion your benefits don't cover, if any.

What to bring

  • Your insurance/benefit card (or the plan number and carrier name)
  • Your Alberta Health Care card
  • Photo ID

Alberta Health Care coverage

Alberta Health Care provides partial coverage for eye exams based on age, medical condition, and the type of exam required. Coverage rules and copay amounts can change, so we recommend calling us before your appointment to confirm what applies to you.

In general, AHC supports:

  • Annual eye exams for children 18 and under
  • Annual eye exams for adults 65 and older
  • Medically necessary exams for patients with specific conditions such as diabetes or glaucoma (copays may apply)

Typically not covered by AHC:

  • Routine eye exams for adults aged 19–64 (usually covered by extended benefits)
  • Glasses frames and lenses
  • Contact lenses and fittings
